Respect and kindness go a long way

Letters

Editor:

We all seem to be stressed and our time and patience pushed to the limit, but we need to be self-aware of our words and actions.

Recently I was waiting in line to pay for purchases at a local store.

The woman in front of me was in a discussion about some clothing. The employee asked her, “Were these two pieces together, Hun?”

The customer then replied in a very snippy manner, “Yes they are, Hun. I am not your Hun, so don’t call me that. I find that very derogatory.”

The employee was taken aback and promptly replied with an apology and explanation that most people don’t object to the terminology. The customer then readily replied, “I’m not most people, so don’t call me that.”

Now I realize there could have been something negative happening in her life that we would not be aware of, but to lash out at an innocent person who was merely doing her job and trying to be pleasant to her customers was completely uncalled for. You have now put a damper on her day, shown yourself to be rude and ungracious — and all for the sake of a perceived slight.

We need to remember to treat each other with respect and kindness. You may have something happening in your life that is stressing you out, but we all don’t know that.
