This past Saturday (Jan. 14), I had the privilege of attending a memorial service for an old rugby mate of mine who passed away just prior to Christmas.

The service, held at Brockton Oval Rugby Club, was attended by several hundred people who came to honour Denny Veitch. Denny had a truly outstanding athletic career in a number of sports. He played elite level football, was an accomplished racquetball, softball and basketball player, and represented Canada in international rugby matches numerous times.

He also made a significant contribution to sport in Canada at the administrative level serving as general manager for the B.C. Lions and the Vancouver Whitecaps during his career. Denny's passion for sport and for life was contagious. He set an example for many of us to follow and it was a privilege to know him and to be his team mate. For those who don't know of the life and times of Denny Veitch, they may be surprised to learn that he did all these remarkable things in the sporting world at the top level with the use of only one arm. Denny lost his right arm in an accident at a very early age. What an amazing man!
