I'm not an expert on independent power projects, wild salmon, government, power distribution or environmental issues. I do understand, however, that water turbidity affects salmon spawning grounds. It would seem that Renewable Power Corp. miscalculated when choosing an alpine lake that is apparently unsuitable for their purposes. The fact that the lake bottom was disturbed is testament to this. Remedial work, even if possible, may cause even more environmental degradation.

The question now is where does the provincial government's loyalty lie, with private business interests or with responsible environmental stewardship? If Renewable Power's president Mr. Soprovich successfully argues for a relaxation of environmental regulations, it will be a death knell for wild salmon stocks everywhere as it will set a precedent.

Where do the Sechelt Nation and our local governments stand on this issue?
