Real source of pride

Re: “Halfmoon Bay local parades with Ceremonial Guard,” July 3.

Given that I am from Halfmoon Bay, there is indeed a very small connection to the Ceremonial Guard in Ottawa, where I have been tasked out to this summer. However, Halfmoon Bay and even more so the Sunshine Coast are more connected to the military as a whole than they understand. I have worked with and met eight other members of the Canadian Armed Forces from the Sunshine Coast, one of whom has passed away. There is also one other I did not have the pleasure of meeting, who was killed while serving on operations in Afghanistan: Private Robert Costall. We should also not forget that we have many veterans living on the Sunshine Coast. Those men are the ones who have brought pride to their country, not me, as I have not yet had the opportunity to serve overseas.

So don’t think of me here in Ottawa marching around in a red uniform. Instead, think of these men and women when remembering the Sunshine Coast’s connection to the Canadian Armed Forces.
