Writing to the paper to express my views isn’t something I do, but the anger and frustration that I (and apparently a lot of others) have over our water situation needs to be said.
The fact that the weather is hotter for longer periods isn’t news. Add to that that the Coast is growing and has been for years isn’t news either. The powers that be here (and you know who you are) have paid this problem lip service for many years and seem to be doing the same thing now. They say that expanding our water infrastructure is expensive – well, what price do they place on human lives and human heath? The fact is that the federal government has grants and loans for just such things. If you can get a grant for meters you can for water infrastructure. They say they need to do environmental studies. Really? So if there’s an issue it’s “sorry, no more water?” I think not. By adding 12 feet to the height of our reservoir, we increase our water by four times.
As a community we double our population every spring through September or October. I don’t see them shutting down any events to save the water. Nor do we reschedule the pool maintenance to save that water in the summer.
It’s time we stand up as one voice and demand action! I know there are a lot of us who are fed up with lip service year after year. This Stage 4 should be our rallying cry. Fix it or step aside for someone who will. My challenge is that we start to pressure the powers that be until we see actual work being done. You want to meter us, fine, but give us the water first.
