I am a mechanic, long-time member of the Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association (SCDRA) and volunteer in our schools where we have recently established a high school drag racing program.
We currently have teams at two of the three high schools and are working on the third. Our program at Elphinstone has been incredibly successful, almost entirely due to the SCDRA support.
The high school drag racing program is an incredibly positive initiative that keeps youth from racing on streets in our community, teaches respect and responsibility around motorized vehicles, and educates them about trades and workplace safety. In addition to all this, it gives students a productive environment to belong to, gives them goals and then the satisfaction of achieving those goals. We have students bugging us all summer to meet them at the school so they can learn more and work on their projects.
This year we hosted our second annual car show at Elphinstone, which brought together people in the community of all ages to share their love of cars.
The SCDRA is an organization that gives back to its community. They have donated over $5,000 to us, not to mention the thousands contributed to the airport to keep it going during difficult times as well as donations to many other community organizations.
I am interested to know what the airport has contributed to our community over the years to fund positive initiatives such as the one that the SCDRA currently supports for our youth.
We need to keep racing at the airport so we can have our youth “race the strip not the street!”
