Editor:
I appreciate the opportunity to respond to David Evans’ letter, “No reply on right to die,” published by Coast Reporter on Aug. 13. Mr. Evans wrote me in my role as member of Parliament prior to the beginning of the 2015 election period, on June 18 and July 23. It is to these letters that I now reply.
We receive over 5,000 letters and emails each month, in addition to numerous phone calls. It sometimes takes longer than we’d like to respond, but we do make the best efforts to respond to all constituent inquiries.
In response to his specific concern, which I have emailed to him personally, the Conservative Party and I believe in protecting the life and security of every Canadian. Poorly defined euthanasia legislation could be perceived to threaten the most vulnerable persons (such as people who are sick, elderly, or those with physical disabilities), who entrust much decision-making to others for their compassionate care.
The Conservative Party has pledged to study the Supreme Court’s Feb. 6 decision and ensure all perspectives on this difficult issue are heard.
