With an election soon approaching I find it astounding how little mention there is of the ever more perilous effects of climate change and acidifying oceans. Politicians seem to be riveted on the economy and jobs. Though I agree they are important, we seem to be missing the fact that, with global warming left unchecked, our economy will be devastated by the cost of trying to repair the resulting catastrophic effects.
Over the last decade, the Canadian government has been one of the least environmentally active to the point that Canada has been labelled a dinosaur. So I am left wondering which politicians will open their eyes and present us with a viable environmental plan.
I remember being shocked and dismayed once when a politician I respected made the blatant statement, “I’ll listen to the people who will get me votes.” But when I think about it, that statement is true and powerful.
I am therefore writing to the political parties to let them know that I care about their environmental plans and that the party which can implement the best plan for our planet will get my vote. Each of us has this power and together we can make a change.
