Dear SCRD Directors:
First, we are dismayed to read in Coast Reporter that the SCRD board as represented by Bryan Shoji is blaming “environmentalists” for the current water shortages (“Emergency water plan in the works,” Aug. 21). The disrespect he showed former directors and the former board is also unacceptable. In our view the SCRD as a governing body has respected and appreciated the representations of citizens and ought not turn to labelling and blaming to deflect criticism. We hope this respectful inclusion is not a thing of the past.
Second, the “plan” being presented to the infrastructure committee as per the agenda fails completely to capture a comprehensive and workable approach and timeline for water provision for the Coast. A plan to identify a second source of water to reduce dependence on the Chapman Creek watershed system is missing. We need a plan that anticipates and accounts for population growth. We need a plan that respects the principle of diversification of supply and the protection of the biological integrity of the Tetrahedron Provincial Park. We need a plan with a much shorter time frame.
Third, we all know that pressures on biodiversity will only increase with climate change. Biodiversity both depends on and protects water supply.
When one is in quicksand, the best strategy is to stay calm and expand the surface area one covers so as to minimize pressure on any one point. We recommend using a similar strategy in planning for water provision with the worst-case scenario firmly in mind. Time is not going to be our friend. Tread gently and use intelligent, comprehensive, respectful, and inclusive processes to gather the best possible ideas and inform your thinking.
Recommendation: That the SCRD board send the plan as presented back for a complete overhaul that includes the points raised above and those of others who seek to improve the water provision capability for the Sunshine Coast.
