Editor:
I am writing to object to the letter from Taneth Amos (Coast Reporter, May 11).
The fire ban in Porpoise Bay Park was initiated about 15 years ago. There is only one household currently in our subdivision that was living here when the ban was put into place by BC Parks. None of the people objecting to the residential rezoning to heavy industrial lived here when the fire ban took place, so they could not have been involved in the fire banning and rezoning as alleged.
Also, at the time the fire ban was put in place, I was told by the park supervisor from BC Parks that the ban had to do with smoke complaints from the park staff and campers who wanted a cleaner air camping experience.
If you talk to the proper BC Parks people, you will find the park is still a jewel and is packed during the summer and appreciated for being a clean air camp ground.
