Editor:
I am writing this letter to express my utmost appreciation for the help I have received from the Open Door Group in Gibsons.
I recently quit my steady job as an English language teacher in Vancouver to make a go of things on the Sunshine Coast, a frightening thought, since I would not be able to collect employment insurance.
The Open Door Group is the organization operating out of the Work BC offices that assists people looking for work. From the moment I walked into the Gibsons office, I felt looked after. Unlike the employment service agencies of my youth, consisting mostly of jobs boards and outdated computers, Open Door Group goes much further.
I first met with Jessica Machado, the highly knowledgeable employment advisor, who assessed very thoroughly my transferable skills. This helped me to cast a broader net in terms of my employment options. I have been pointed to invaluable resources to bring me up to speed with “what’s hot and what’s not” concerning job search strategies. I took part in an online program which has helped me innumerably with targeting work.
I have been alerted regularly of job postings that could match my interest and skill set. I have even been able to send my resume and cover letters to the centre for editing. Although I haven’t landed work yet, I feel like I will soon. If anyone is unemployed and stuck with how and where to get work, I strongly recommend taking advantage of the fantastic services at Open Door Group.
