No reply on right to die

As we enter upon a national election, I would like to call attention to my non-experience with our MP John Weston.

The Supreme Court of Canada has voted 9-0 decriminalizing doctor-assisted suicide, I assume on the basis of the masterful presentation made by the spokesman for dying with dignity proponents and by various recent polls showing that the vast majority of Canadians are in favour of new right-to-die legislation.

Twice I have conveyed my support of such new laws to Mr. Weston and have received no reply other than an automated “message received” notice.

Now, Mr. Weston is, of course, entitled to his personal views on this very serious subject, whether his views are grounded in religion or not. (I put it this way, because his online government of Canada entry gives his religion as “Christian.” Fair enough.) But one would think, surely, that one who fairly represents all in his riding, whether they voted for him or not, would feel some duty to respond with a clear stance of his own on the matter – as conveyed directly by him or a staff member.

It seems to me that it is worth Mr. Weston’s constituents’ knowing at least that he is not willing to risk political capital on being clear about the dying with dignity issue, inferior for voters as that knowledge would be to knowing what his views actually are.
