Editor:
There is no need for the anti-terrorism bill in Canada.
Two deaths last fall from separate lone wolf attacks do not justify the draconian Bill C-51 (an average of 10 people die in Canada each year from lightning). The bill will undermine our civil rights and is simply not necessary — we already have adequate measures in place. If C-51 passes, CSIS will not be bound by the Charter of Rights and will operate with little to no oversight, not to mention the untold millions of dollars to implement — rather like taking a sledge hammer to swat a mosquito.
So why all the hype?
Studies show that if you get people concerned about safety and security, they will vote Conservative. So let’s not be fooled about the real motives for Bill C-51 in an election year. Let your member of Parliament know that you’re not in favour of having our rights trampled for trumped up threats.
