Re: “DNA test changed my life” by Gill Poulton, Letters, Jan. 17.
Congratulations to Gill Poulton on finding your birth relatives!
I received the most incredible gift about a month before my 72nd birthday this past October.
I was adopted by loving parents as an infant. In August I sent a message to a person whose DNA was listed as a possible first cousin on Ancestry.ca. I said “looks like we’re cousins!” She replied a month later asking for my birth and adoption records and information about myself.
Through a series of back and forth messages I learned I have two brothers and four sisters and many nieces and nephews on my birth father’s side.
This is part of the beautiful and loving reply I received from my new sister: “You are our sibling. Welcome. I sent you a photo of dad with who I believe could be your birth mother. Huge hugs, Ian. When I read how difficult this was for both (birth parents), [it] brought tears. You are truly loved.”
My wife, our daughters, our grandchildren and I are truly blessed by the warm and welcoming love and kindness shown by our new beautiful family. It’s overwhelming, extremely emotional and truly wonderful!
