Re: Existing shipping route will be used (Coast Reporter, April 10)

On Saturday, March 21, several people from the Sunshine Coast attended a round table discussion on Gambier Island about the proposed Woodfibre LNG project in Howe Sound.

To our surprise, Woodfibre LNG president Anthony Gelotti talked about the possibility LNG tankers would travel up and down Thornborough Channel, between Howe Sound Pulp and Paper and the west side of Gambier. Close to the Sunshine Coast.

At Langdale, the tankers would change course to Collingwood Channel, between Keats and Bowen, and would then exit into the Salish Sea.

Several people asked the company for comment or an explanation.

In a letter to the Coast Reporter (April 10), Byng Giraud, vice president corporate affairs of Woodfibre LNG, said that there had been some inquiries about the proposed route, and he wanted to address any possible misunderstanding.

He assured his readers that the tankers would go through Queen Charlotte Channel between Bowen Island and West Vancouver, past Gambier Island and then to the Woodfibre LNG terminal.

It is interesting that he does not say on what side of Gambier the tankers would pass. Rather than answering a question, he raises another one.

We can now ask: “Which route will the tankers take?” and “Why did he not answer that question?”
