Recently, some older area residents have raised their voices at public meetings to protest — why, I cannot comprehend — street lights and paved roads.
As an older pedestrian, I like sidewalks. As an older, slower cyclist, I love paving. As a senior homeowner, I value the security and safety of having a street light right outside my home.
Should I need emergency help, any first responders will arrive faster when they can see my house number and drive right up. When it snows, the snowplow can clear the hill to the main roads. My home insurance is slightly less because I have these improvements.
There are legitimate concerns, which warrant public speeches and letters to our local government. Lighting and blacktop are not them.
