Misinformation rules the day

It seems as if the term "misinformation rules" is an accurate slogan for the "concerned East Porpoise Bay citizens" who have spoken their opposition regarding any and all changes occurring in the District of Sechelt. These citizens are mostly imports from the Lower Mainland and have little to no regard for the future well being of us Sechelt "lifers."

These same citizens turn up at each council meeting and public hearing, and they speak their mind loudly and incorrectly. These people all live on the same street in Porpoise Bay, and they have made a sincere contribution to our 87 per cent residential tax base here in the District. That contribution is based on a retirees' vision of the "good life," and it holds little concern towards the sustainability of that lifestyle. Their "concern" does not even allow the following generations a chance at succeeding here in the District of Sechelt.

Jim Cleghorn said it best at the most recent public hearing: if council runs every potential business venture out of town, then the town will simply fold in on itself.

I'm sure I don't have to remind everyone that an overwhelming majority voted for the Target Marine rezoning application, which offered the Sunshine Coast a once in a lifetime opportunity to reach out to the world and lure in those elusive tourist dollars. However, the group that used the tourist argument against the current rezoning application completely ignored the potential tourist draw of a caviar plant on the Coast because at that time, it didn't suit their purpose. That is the bottom line of all of these issues, and that's what the majority would like to see changed.

Our new council and mayor have worked tirelessly to change the world's perception of Sechelt, and as residents it's our duty to aid them in this cause.
