Manipulating the process

LETTERS

Editor:

In reviewing the written submissions to the Gibsons official community plan public hearing process, it was most illuminating to analyze those submissions from residents who were opposed to any changes to our decade-old OCP.

The number of submissions far exceeded the number of residents writing.

This discrepancy was due to: four people submitting 29 letters, 16 people sending five form letters each, nine people sending four and five form letters each with no recognizable signatures, seven people sending four form letters each, and a further 18 people sending in two to three form letters each.

These actions focused on the quantity of pieces of paper rather than individuals expressing their own specific concerns in writing. This is not democracy, by any stretch of the rules that we cherish.

In sharp contrast, those in favour of the OCP updates made only one submission each in their own words.

We hope that future public hearings will require the name and address of each resident with a verifiable signature.
