Rod Run one of a kind

Letters

Editor:

Our group would like to thank Ken Begg, president, Al Hemstreet, vice president, and the members of the Coasters Car Club for once again doing a fantastic job organizing and running the Sleepy Hollow Rod Run Friday night, Aug. 9.

My wife and I operate an accommodation on Highway 101 by Mason Road and we have watched the run since 2001. At that time we sat in the back of our pickup truck on lawn chairs and waved at the passing cars. There weren’t many spectators to be seen in our area. Now when we look either way from our driveway the highway is absolutely packed with spectators. For the past 10 years we hosted a full-blown potluck party, complete with props, theme costumes and great music playing as the cars go by. Some of our themes have been Western, Christmas in August, complete with two Santa Clauses, Margaritaville and Remember the ’80s. It is such a pleasure to watch the car people drive by with huge smiles on their faces as they watch us crazies wave at them. We usually have car people stay at our accommodation and I can’t count the times I have been told by off-Coast participants that on the Lower Mainland they can go to show-and-shines every weekend through the summer. The main reason they come here is for the Friday night rod run. Most have never witnessed so many spectators lining the roads.

The Sleepy Hollow Rod Run is one of a kind. Thanks to the guys and gals in the club who volunteer their time to make one of the best events on the Sunshine Coast happen.
