Crosswalks reflect pride

Letters

Editor:

I’m writing in regards to Mary Kay Wyman’s letter regarding the crosswalks in Gibsons (“End the distraction,” Aug. 16). Yes, Pride Day is over for you, but it is still on and going strong for millions of others.

Those crosswalks help show the power one’s voice can bring. What used to be seen as a horrible thing is now something to be very proud of. Gay, lesbian, transsexual, whatever one is born, it is the same as being born straight. And those crosswalks show how equal each one is.

As for problems come fall, spring, and winter – I’m not sure how these will cause problems. The only difference is we get a lot of rain, sometimes snow. The two white lines are only there to tell drivers that pedestrians have the legal right to cross, and I think walking on a beautiful, colourful crosswalk is a lot nicer than just the street. Sharing in the beauty and pride is a wonderful thing. You should try it one day, because it is only getting stronger and will never go away.
