Letters: Passing perspective

“Passing Cyclists” (April 19) response: I found the letter last week about passing cyclists interesting. I would just like to add a slightly different viewpoint. In the letter the writer mentioned that “While most cyclists are sensible ...and ride as far from the fog line as is safe.” I would like to point out that many times the cyclist is forced to ride in the road rather than the shoulder is due to the mass of rocks, glass and other debris in the shoulder.  It might be a little more inconvenient to have to slow down for a second or two to safely pass a cyclist now that the law has been changed. But are we not trying to be more environmentally friendly?  As for the ticket concern, according to the BC Government website under section 157.1: “(3) A driver who takes an action that would otherwise contravene section 151 (b), (f) or (g) or 155 (1) does not contravene the provision if

(a) the action is taken while the driver is causing the vehicle to pass a person in compliance with this section, and

(b) the driver has ascertained that the action can be taken safely and without affecting the travel of another vehicle.
