Editor:
As a resident and business owner in Gibsons for 42 years, I have watched the slow deterioration of Lower Gibsons and the struggle the merchants have there. Although not usually involved in politics of the town, I now find the need to speak out.
Never, in those 42 years, have I seen any one person willing to invest the time, the money, and the energy into a project for our community as Klaus Fuerniss has for the George Hotel and Residences.
My greatest fear is that if we refuse to go ahead with the George, no one will be willing to make such an investment in our town again for at least 20 years.
As the investment in the George has been pending for 10 long years, I made a concerted effort during the last election to research the beliefs of each candidate. A council was needed that would support growth and development, a council that would wake up the town and move forward with much needed progress.
Accordingly I gave each member of council my vote, and was proud to do so, certain from their campaign commitments that we would finally see much needed positive growth in our community.
For example, when Coun. Stafford Lumley came to my door, he promised me that he was in favour of the George. Now, however, it appears to me he is waffling. Has he changed his mind?
I gave him my vote, and I need to know: is he an honourable man of his word? Will he keep his promise to me? I promised him my vote, and I kept my promise!
