In debating the future of a Gibsons hotel, it seems to me that one essential has been ignored. The claim is that the hotel will create jobs, but jobs for whom?
Will the hotel employ local residents for low paying jobs – room cleaners, waitresses, porters – but import its managerial staff from Vancouver?
In all the arrangements for a new facility, surely some mandate should require that a certain proportion of higher paying/more professional jobs be reserved for residents.
The Gibsons waterfront is a very desirable location, and there will be many proposals for “development” over the years. Let’s be sure that whatever is chosen is for the best interests of as many residents as possible, including potential employees.
