I spent my Sunday announcing at the drag races, constantly aware that every racer on every run was being served by two “invisible” volunteer heroines.

Emma Hemstreet and MacKenzie Sutherland are high school students who willingly took on the unenviable task of running the little wooden “time shack” at the end of the drag strip, with no view of the racing. Throughout the day they handed every racer their printed results slip, no doubt praying it would please rather than disappoint.

There were dozens of keen volunteers there, all commendable, but on Sunday I kept thinking, on my airy panoramic perch, of those two young women, Emma and MacKenzie, doing the real work, out of sight.
