Having the rare and life-changing experience of standing by to witness the loss of our home and business in a serious fire and its equivalent in flood damage, I have gained an infinite gratitude and new perspective on what it is to be a local hero.
After having called 911 and standing by watching the local Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department attend to the call and our burning home, I witnessed and felt a completely new appreciation for what it must take for someone to put themselves in the way of danger and adversity, for the sake of another ... for the sake of strangers! To run into a burning building when human instinct says to keep out takes something that only heroes are made of.
Having been in social services for 16 years and practising and teaching alternative healing for as many, I have rarely witnessed such truly heroic efforts.
As every fire department and its committed members must do, the people of the Halfmoon Bay Fire and Rescue acted with bravery, focus and a selflessness that is rare these days, and for which they should be sincerely commended.
Hats off, crew, to all those who choose to serve in such an incredible manner. We thank you, we see you, we honour you!
With unending gratitude, Jennifer Field Fletcher, Halfmoon Haven Beachfront Retreat & Spa
