Editor:
I would like to thank Buddy Boyd for the great recycling services he is providing to us on the Coast at the Gibsons Recycling Depot. Over the years he has been a leader in recycling and I am glad to see he is now collecting organic waste to be recycled.
All the things that you can’t put into a home compost box such as bones, cooked food waste and things with oils or sauces on them can now be taken to the Gibsons Depot. There is a charge, but 25 cents for a gallon container and $1 for five gallons. What a bargain!
Some people may worry about health hazards keeping food waste in a container to be recycled but if you do it correctly it is no big deal. For the last month we have been collecting organic waste in a container that allows air circulation and has a filter to keep smells down and we have had no issues. For things that might be a problem such as raw poultry carcasses or fish, just put it in a plastic bag and freeze it till you’re ready to take it in.
With all the composting, recycling and now organic waste — at our house of two we are now down to a kitchen catcher per week going to the landfill.
Thanks very much Buddy for the great service and the friendly helpful staff you have at the Depot; we commend your efforts to a sustainable future.
