I see that some people are already lining up on both sides of the idea of a road link to the other side of Howe Sound. I recently read a paper on adding fixed links to islands, including the one to P.E.I. It seems that, yes, the links do lead to some loss of insularity, but the net result seems to be to stabilize the community.
None of the dire predictions concocted by opponents seem to have materialized. I have already heard some pretty far-out prognostications such as we will run out of water, or drown in our excess sewage, or experience unfettered crime like Surrey.
Maybe people can wait to see what the study comes up with before they climb on one bandwagon or the other. And maybe people will take the time to gather some facts and reflect on the implications for themselves, their families and businesses and the long-term interests of community as a whole. It would be a nice change from just blindly buying into the position of whoever shouts the loudest.
