I have been in Gibsons since 1980, when, working at the Sunshine Coast News, I learned what kind of a vibrant community this place is. I love it.
I know that the active participation of citizens in governance is important in keeping local government responsive, open and honest. Barry Janyk, as Gibsons mayor, brought citizens onto all committees and established public planning processes for which Gibsons was provincially and internationally recognized. Wayne Rowe, on the other hand, has rejected open democracy, with the result that the Town’s processing of the “George” application has become highly suspect.
Dozens of questions have no venue in which to seek answers. An official public hearing with its limitations will not reveal anything. The project has already been deadly to the feelings of residents. If this nightmare is allowed to set foot in our village, it will spawn more such waterfront development and the charm and ambience we enjoy will be lost forever. This project is so contrary to the vision we citizens created in our official community plan years ago that it makes me cry.
The Town’s consultants are concerned that this project risks the Gibsons aquifer. Shouldn’t you be?
