FortisBC responds

Letters

Editor:

We would like to take this opportunity to clarify some statements raised in Sheila Page’s letter “An offer to FortisBC” (Coast Reporter, April 9).

Serving homes and businesses in the Sunshine Coast since 1991, FortisBC delivers approximately 21 per cent of the total energy consumed in the province, more than any other utility in B.C.

It’s important for people to remember that natural gas is used by more than 960,000 of our customers in B.C. for hot water, heating and to cook their food.

While we do not produce or extract natural gas, we do feel it’s important that British Columbians understand where natural gas comes from and the regulations in place to oversee shale gas development in the province.

B.C. has been producing natural gas for more than 50 years, and hydraulic fracturing has been taking place for decades.

According to government sources, more than 50 per cent of the gas produced in B.C. today is from shale sources. That extensive experience has enabled government to put strict rules in place to govern natural gas exploration and ensure responsible resource development. In fact, our province is globally recognized as having some of the highest standards for safety and environmental protection.

B.C. natural gas is a safe and reliable energy source, which is why it’s a sought after energy choice in our province, Canada and other parts of the world.

Renewable natural gas is produced on a much smaller scale than natural gas and is therefore more expensive. The extra cost flows through to our local suppliers to make sure they are paid a fair price for their product.
