Dear firefighters:

We are writing to express our profound gratitude for the work you did in the early hours of Aug. 1 on the fire at our family home.

Thanks to you, and to the grace of no wind, a catastrophe was averted. You can see by the singed cedar at the front of the house how close we came to a forest fire which would have been truly awful.

We are also grateful for the small blessings: for your courtesy and calm.

For the time that fire Chief Bruce Searle spent in the afternoon trying to locate the still smoking hot spots, for you coming back at dinner time to douse it again. And for Andre pulling out the small dresser which contained some valuables.

We are grateful that you go out on all the calls. Your dedication to the community is admirable.
