This dry spell is very worrying and as I go about my daily routine I’m constantly thinking of ways to conserve water.

Here’s a list of simple ways to ration this precious stuff during the heat wave. I sincerely hope all Coasters are doing their part (I recently saw someone power-washing his very long driveway in my neighbourhood – very irresponsible, I think).

Don’t run the faucet while brushing your teeth. Run just a small trickle when rinsing dishes or washing hands. Try to shower every second day; two minutes are sufficient. Postpone washing your hair by another day. When washing your hair in the shower, wet your hair, then turn off the tap while applying shampoo. Do a load of laundry only when you have enough to fill the machine, and hang it up outside. Postpone washing big items such as quilts and pillows until serious rain begins in the fall. Wear your clothes one more time instead of tossing them in the laundry hamper. Organize your dishwasher carefully so you can fill it to maximum before running a load. Wash your veggies and fruit in a bowl, then pour the water onto your plants. Flush the toilet only when necessary.

Big no-nos: Do not wash your car. Do not wash your driveway. Do not wash your deck or house exterior
. Do not water your lawn. It will go dormant and get green again in the fall.

Perhaps readers have some other water-conservation ideas.
