Complain, complain, complain

How easy it is to be “for” or “against” just about anything, and how hard it is to weigh all the options, take your best shot and “git ‘er done.”

This is the eternal challenge of city councils everywhere.

I read every week how mayor and council in Sechelt and in Gibsons are doing everything wrong. What a thankless job it seems to be. The fact is that it’s not easy to please everyone, especially those who make a career out of finding fault.

Sadly, it also appears that the fault finders seldom offer solutions. As an example, Sechelt council was elected largely on the promise of building a new sewage treatment plant, and in spite of all the complaints regarding the details of location, design and financing, they kept their promise.

But doing the necessary is only part of the job. The other part of the job is dealing with development, future planning, industrial expansion, etc. in the context of our community stakeholders. Stakeholders would be all of us who live here, work here and have a vested interest in maintaining and financing our preferred way of life.

No easy thing. I don’t care if every decision is perfect. I care if their heart is in the right place. It’s clearly easier to criticize council than it is to be council. Not happy? Run for office. It now happens every four years. Take your shot — be for doing right all the things you believe are being done wrong. Just remember, not everyone will agree with you, either.
