Commuters shut out again

I have just read the FAC advertisement (Coast Reporter, Jan. 22), and must voice my displeasure with B.C. Ferries and pending rate increases to accommodate commuters who support this run every day in order for us to get home in a timely manner during the summer months.

Why can B.C. Ferries put on an extra run, leaving Horseshoe Bay to Langdale at 11 p.m. from Feb. 12 to 28, with no mention of fare increase? That is 17 extra sailings, if I count correctly.

The commuters living on the Coast supporting this route have been asking that the 5:30 p.m. sailing be put back on Tuesday and Wednesday during the summer months - and we can get it maybe as a trial, if we are willing to have a fare increase?

The summer schedule runs from June 30 to Sept. 1. Given these days, we are talking about 19 extra sailings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

B.C. Ferries can put on 17 extra sailings while the Olympics are on with no mention of a fare increase, but can't put on 19 extra sailings for people who need this ferry and support it regularly without a fare increase?

How long is this pending 1.5 per cent increase supposed to be for - just the summer months or ongoing? Did the FAC address the Olympic dates extra sailings?
