Re: Community members strategize to oust Harper (Coast Reporter, May 29).
We voted against Hen-derson, Albertans voted against their Conservative government, now Jef Keighley proposes that we vote against Harper. Doesn’t anyone vote “for” anymore?
Unfortunately, Jef is right! Harper has to go.
But we can blame Canadian parliamentary law for letting Harper dig his grave. The British gave us this law, then they changed theirs, but we haven’t changed ours. Under our outdated law, a majority government can move the “governing function” from the House to the Prime Minister’s Office, thereby circumventing our democracy.
The British changed their law so that in all but a few cases, MPs vote as representatives of their constituents, not members of the party. Under Canadian law, the MPs have to vote the party line. Hence Harper’s dictatorship.
We need the federal Liberals and NDP to form a coalition so they can update our law. It is not in the interest of any majority government to make this change.
