Editor:
I read the letter from Paul Rhodes last week titled “Open mind on climate change.” Mr. Rhodes is entitled to his views. Your paper, however, does the community a disservice in giving those views a forum. There is no legitimate scientific debate about climate change. It is a fact that human activity has led to an increase in greenhouse gases, causing an increase in global temperatures leading to climate change. Would your paper publish a letter asserting that we should have an “open mind” on whether the earth is round, and give voice to the flat earth proponents?
The crisis of climate change is too serious to try and distract with views that advance this as an issue open to debate. The science proves otherwise. Environment Canada states that “warming over the 20th century is indisputable and largely due to human activities” and that “the science is conclusive: warming is unequivocal and human influence on the climate system is clear.”
Patrick Moore, cited by Mr. Rhodes, is not a climate scientist. He is a biologist and a paid speaker for many resource industry organizations. Let’s stick to the facts, as established by the experts.
