Re: "SIB angered over administrative changes" (Coast Reporter, May 11)

I am responding to this article with a certain degree of misgiving. As a Canadian, my freedom of expression is protected under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. As an employee of School District No. 46, I am not unfettered in my right to comment. I am not free to share all my opinions. At the end of the day, however, I can comment on ideas, not individuals.

Two key ideas, "change without consultation" and "first of all do no harm" are all wrapped up in this situation. Some adults involved, including decision makers and those affected, are likely feeling ignored, angry and/or devastated. None of these are good foundations for sustainable educational growth. None of these are good foundations for successful long-term relationships.

Is there a possibility of harm? For at-risk learners, the students involved, any change in support can be chancy. For those of us who support at-risk learners, maintaining emotional balance when needed supports are withdrawn is an ongoing battle.

My suggestion is that clearer heads prevail. Perhaps a neutral party like Dr. Gabor Mate from Vancouver could help in this matter.
