George Gibson arrived in a boat called the Swamp Angel and because of the beautiful harbour made this his home and now ours. Over the years the village has grown into a town and the harbour is essentially responsible because it has provided economy to the town and is a working harbour.
Past councils have stood up to public protest/popularity and protected this resource by not allowing non-conforming development on the harbour because it did not meet the zoning and OCP guidelines.
When this council was elected, I do believe, they swore to uphold the Town’s bylaws. This council is now faced with a developer who has thrown down an ultimatum – “last time changing this design” – and this design still does not meet Town bylaws and the Harbour Area Plan (which was a well thought out plan and generally accepted and approved by the residents of Gibsons). Even with amendments to the bylaws that the Town has been willing to concede to this design, it still does not meet the guidelines.
Is this council going to trade the town’s most precious asset? Or is this mayor and council going to be an “angel” and “Rowe” the boat back before the town swamps?
