Reading Nancy Denham’s letter in support of the hospital name change (Coast Reporter, May 16) made me decide to voice my own support of the idea.
I wholeheartedly agreed with the sentiment expressed in her letter. I know some people feel that changing the name of St. Mary’s Hospital will somehow not honour and respect the doctors and community that worked hard and made sacrifices to build the hospital in the first place. However, for me, supporting the name change doesn’t mean I don’t recognize and appreciate beyond words those amazing people who made our small hospital a reality.
The hospital itself is a testament to their dedication and forward thinking.
What it does mean is that I believe changing the name to something more representative of shíshálh culture shows that in some small way we understand and acknowledge the pain of past wrongs, honour those feelings and value our future relationship enough to make this change.
