Re: “All candidates mostly agree on major issues,” June 19.
In the past, the Sunshine Coast Club of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) has appreciated your paper’s careful reporting of CFUW events. However, we were disappointed to see that Jacob Roberts’ coverage of the candidates meeting of June 15 did not mention that this event was organized and hosted by the CFUW Sunshine Coast Club.
I believe it is important to acknowledge the organizer of events such as this one. Acknowledgement is courteous to the organizing group and also recognizes that each group has its own agenda. CFUW works to improve the status of women, and to promote human rights, public education, social justice, and peace. Our meeting ensured that candidates are aware of issues that concern our club’s members, such as eliminating child poverty and addressing violence against women, especially Aboriginal women. Not one of these issues was mentioned by your reporter.
In addition, I should clarify that the CFUW SC offered to accommodate Mr. Weston’s schedule but he did not respond to this offer. We therefore decided to hold our event without him.
Thank you once again for the interest Coast Reporter has shown in CFUW SC events over the years. It is much appreciated.
Barbara Cochran, president, CFUW Sunshine Coast
