A mess Corrigan didn’t create

Letters

Editor:

Oh, dear, are we hurting Mr. Corrigan’s bottom line by complaining about ferry fares? Apologies.

To be fair, it is not his fault. He did not create the mess he now defends, and he has not the power to change the cause of the mess.

Ms. Clark was in the Liberal provincial government when the Ferry Corp was created to supposedly save us all on interest by moving the capital costs of the ferry system off of the province’s balance sheet — a bookkeeping trick that no doubt went unnoticed in Wall Street and Bay Street where our interest rates are determined?

Ms. Clark could unwrap the Ferry Corp any time she wished, put it back the way Social Credit had it.

It would be fair to those living in ferry dependent communities. We pay our share of highways and water crossings (bridges) across B.C., like everyone else in B.C. But only we pay for the capital and maintenance of our highway water crossings (ferries). Operating ferries are different, should be paid by users individually.

Had I known 20 years ago what I know now, I would never have moved to the Coast when I retired. But, back then, nobody knew what dirty political deeds were in our future. I can’t move back, can’t afford it. People facing similar choices now are staying away. That is why our community is in decline, going down a vicious spiral like the Ferry Corp.
