We experienced a very scary incident last weekend and very nearly lost our beloved nine-month old puppy.

Lucy is a pug/chihuahua cross (a chug) who is, of course, pretty small. She was enjoying a happy time on the beach at the far end of Davis Bay with my daughter and granddaughter when she suddenly flopped down on a beach towel and became unresponsive, unable to stand or walk. The situation did not improve, so my daughter called me and we took her to the vet.

The vet examined her and said that she was pretty sure that it was marijuana poisoning and that Lucy was the fourth case she had seen that week.

Our dog spent the night at the clinic on an IV, being flushed out and was given a charcoal compound to absorb the poison. The vet could not give us any reassurance that she would survive through the night, but that she would check up on her.

We would like to thank the staff at Sechelt Animal Hospital for their prompt care and compassion. The next morning Lucy was almost back to her old frisky self.

A warning to dog owners to watch what their dog is ingesting on the beach. Obviously Lucy got hold of a discarded marijuana stub and it nearly cost her life.
