A cycling safety solution

As an everyday bicycle commuter between Wilson Creek and Sechelt, and in honour of "Bike to Work" week, I would like to express both my appreciation and concern about the "completed" million dollar Highway 101 upgrade.

I am aware that vehicle drivers and Selma Park residents were inconvenienced for many months because of this project and are no doubt glad to see the "completed" sign as they enter Davis Bay. We cyclists now enjoy a much safer trek up Davis Bay hill and through Selma Park, so, thank you taxpayers.

However, the problem with the current upgrade is that cyclists must veer out onto the main highway, across the white line, at Selma Park Road in order to avoid a crater usually filled with rain water. Every day this is a dangerous curve for cyclists. Most drivers see it coming and slow down or edge into the oncoming lane. I am concerned, though, that one day an inexperienced or distracted driver will fail to do so.

It seems to me that a small strip of extra pavement around that bend, with appropriate drainage, would eliminate this accident waiting to happen.
