E-Comm fire dispatch had to deal with several calls about a possible brush fire near Sechelt Saturday night, but the fire, visible from several areas around Sandy Hook, was a controlled burn and did not require a response from firefighters.

Sechelt Fire Chief Trevor Pike confirmed to Coast Reporter that the burn was well outside Sechelt’s fire protection zone in an area regulated by the BC Wildfire Service and the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development (FLNRORD).

FLNRORD officials said people setting Category 3 fires, such as a slash burn, require a registration number from the BC Wildfire Service, although the agency doesn’t issue formal permits.

Permits are usually required inside municipalities or fire protection districts.

The public is able to track registered burns anywhere in the province through an interactive map on the BC Wildfire Service website.

There are a least three burns currently registered in the area where the fire was reported on Saturday night.
