Bad weather has led SD 46 to close Gibsons Elementary, and other Sunshine Coast schools for three days this week.

Environment Canada has lifted the weather warnings for the Sunshine Coast and forecasters say the region will get a break from the snow until Thursday night.

However, poor road conditions led School District No. 46 to close schools for a third day.

“We have consulted across the district and driven the roads this evening. Main roads are icy in many places and our side roads are slippery and dangerous for our students, their families and our staff. RCMP are advising against travel this evening," said Superintendent Patrick Bocking. "Things may improve in the morning to a degree, but there will certainly be roads that are not safe for travel. Therefore, all SD 46 schools and district facilities will be closed to students and staff tomorrow, Wednesday, February 13, 2019. Have a safe, warm and enjoyable day.”

Icy conditions Tuesday night led Sunshine Coast RCMP to shut down Highway 101 near Largo Road in Roberts Creek and again near Rat Portage Hill as a result of trucks getting stuck and sliding of the road.

Drive BC was reporting slushy sections on Highway 101 north of Sechelt Wednesday morning, and compact ice and snow with slippery sections between Sechelt and Gibsons.

The Town of Gibsons also said it would be opening its cold weather drop-in again Wednesday. The drop-in is at the old Heath Authority office on South Fletcher Road, below School District No. 46 headquarters, and about 8 people took advantage of the offer of a warm place to stay and the coffee and food on Tuesday.

And, as of 6:45 Wednesday morning Sunshine Coast Transit was running on the following routes:

Route 1 – no Lower Road, or Marine Drive service; but using the Bypass to Langdale; also providing service to Lower Gibsons at the Franklin Loop and the Chaster Loop.
Route 2 - West Sechelt – regular Service
Route 3 - Arena – regular service
Route 4 - Halfmoon Bay - highway service to Halfmoon Bay Store; no service on Redrooffs Road
Route 90 – regular service; but using the Bypass and not Marine Drive or North Road.
