Swimmer dies near Port Mellon

A man in his 70s is dead after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest while swimming in Howe Sound Aug. 31. The man had been swimming near Woolridge Island, off Port Mellon, around 7 p.m. when the incident occurred.

A man in his 70s is dead after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest while swimming in Howe Sound Aug. 31.

The man had been swimming near Woolridge Island, off Port Mellon, around 7 p.m. when the incident occurred.

RCMSAR Station 14 from Gibsons, the Coast Guard hovercraft Moytel as well as RCMP and BC Ambulance crews responded and an air ambulance was dispatched, using the Langdale ferry terminal as a landing zone.

According to Sunshine Coast RCMP, bystanders on shore performed CPR while awaiting help.

The man, however, could not be revived. His name has not been released.
