The Passenger Transportation Board (PTB) is currently considering one application to operate a ride-hailing service on the Sunshine Coast.

The PTB started accepting applications for ride-hailing operations, or Transportation Network Services, on Sept. 3 and put the application from Sechelt-based Coastal Rides out for comment on Oct. 30.

Company principal Ryan Staley said in the application: “The mission of Coastal Rides is to make travel on the Sunshine Coast without a private vehicle the preferred option. With affordable convenient service, visitors and residents will be able to leave their own car at home.”

The company has also established a Facebook presence and started to recruit potential drivers through its website.

The deadline for submissions on the Coastal Rides application is Nov. 12. Submissions can be made via the PTB website at www.ptboard.bc.ca

If the application is approved, the PTB will set a minimum rate the company must charge based on a review of its application and current taxi rates in the area.
