Chatelech Secondary Student Abby Grunenberg has been selected as student trustee on the School District No. 46 (SD46) school board for the upcoming school year.

“The opportunity to impact future students is an honour, and I am proud to represent the diverse students of SD46,” said Grunenberg in a release. “I look forward to working with the other trustees to improve students’ experiences.”

The Grade 12 student will be the eighth student trustee to sit on the school board.

“Students in our district have perspectives that the rest of us simply don’t,” said school board chair Pammila Ruth. “Having a clear student voice at the board table allows us to hear that perspective in a very special way and greatly improves our decisions and directions.”

SD46 is one of a handful of school districts in the province with student trustees. Because they are not publicly elected, student trustees do not have the power to vote at the board level.

Grunenberg was elected by the District Student Leadership Team (DSLT), a group of students from all of the SD46 high schools. Established by the school district, the DSLT helps the student trustee to understand issues that are relevant to the student body and provides a venue for student discussion and support, the release said.
