With a new coach arriving from Poland in mid-October, the Sunshine Coast Skating Club had to get creative in order to get the 2005/06 season off to an exciting start. They did just that by starting out their year with two of the most sought after coaches in Canada.

Karen Magnussen will travel from Vancouver every Thursday to coach the Pre-Competitive, StarSkate, and possibly the Senior Power-Skating sessions. For those not in the know, Magnussen represented Canada in the 1972 Olympics, making all of Canada proud when she returned with a silver medal.

She then went on to win gold at the 1973 World Figure Skating Championships. She received the Order of Canada and has been inducted into the Canadian Figure Skating Hall of Fame, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, and the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame. She is currently the newly appointed Director of Coaching at the North Shore Winter Club.

Also traveling from Vancouver will be Jessica Torvick.

Jessica started her illustrious career right here on the Sunshine Coast. She went on to attain triple gold status as well as competing at the provincial level. What Jessica is most proud of though, is the fact that she is now teaching alongside herÊmentor and former coach at the North Shore Winter Club. Jessica will be at the Sunshine Coast Arena on Mondays covering CanSkate, Pre-Competitive, and StarSkate classes.

Theses two new coaches join Chantelle Dibley, Anita Flay, and Genevieve Pierre in what looks to be another exciting year for the Sunshine Coast Skating Club.

The arrival of Polish coach Adam Zalegowski in mid-October will add even more excitement to the club.

Zalegowski will bring a wealth of competitive experience with him and the club is looking forward to working with him.

If you are interested in skating for fun or at a competitive level, registration will be held at the arena the week of Sept. 12 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
