A group of hoop stars from Chatelech and Elphin-stone Secondary Schools are in Pitt Meadows this week for an intensive summer basketball camp.
On Sunday, eight dedicated players from the Coast left for Pitt Meadows. Most of these players also attended a spring league camp earlier this year in North Vancouver.
"No longer can a team just start in November and hope to be successful," said Chat senior boys' coach Garry Nohr, who has been working with the players the past few works in preparation for the camp. "In this sport, all coaches and players must work at their game all year."
Nohr said many of these players have attended other camps this summer and will be going to small camps in the fall.
The Pitt camp is showcasing players from 36 of the top high school basketball teams in the province. Although both schools on the Coast are considered AA schools in the North Shore League, most of the teams going to the camp are AAA. They therefore have more players to select from to form their teams, as they are much bigger schools.
"The players are spending a week sleeping in a classroom and playing two games per day while also attending clinics to improve their skills," said Nohr. "I thought I would never be sleeping in a gym again, but I'm prepared to do so to promote the game on the Coast. Congratulations should go to these boys as they maintain their marks in school while dedicating themselves to a sport."
