Four teams competed in the first-ever Coast ultimate frisbee tournament last weekend.

The Sunshine Coast Ultimate Disc Association (SCUDA) hosted the first ever ultimate frisbee tournament on the Sunshine Coast this past Saturday, May 7, at Shirley Macey Park. The event was a big success, with 31 participants and numerous family members cheering from the sidelines.

Four teams composed of players aged 12 and older competed on teams formed that morning in a round robin and playoff round. Most games were close, so close we needed to play a short tiebreaker to determine the second seed in the playoffs. The winning team went home with ultimate-print bucket hats and a gift card to a local restaurant. Draw prizes meant almost everyone got a goodie!

Ultimate Frisbee is a sport where two teams pass a plastic disc, each trying to score by a teammate catching it in the end zone.

A local frisbee tournament has been discussed by original members of SCUDA, who say that the club has been around for 40 years or more. We were happy to make a tournament a reality and to see so many new faces! Thanks to all who played, watched, did childcare or cooked our lunch.

Look out for the second annual tournament next year. In the meantime, we play pick-up at Cliff Gilker Park on Thursdays at 8 p.m. Beginners are welcome. Get on the mailing list by contacting [email protected] or find us on Facebook:  facebook.com/groups/Scuda.
